Hots Shots Is Back For Another Weekend In Downtown Yakima

Posted: Updated:
YAKIMA, WA.- One of Yakima's most popular summer events started this morning bright and early. Basketball players from all over the Northwest are here for a three on three tournament this weekend.

Crowds have been here on Yakima Ave. since eight this morning, finding good seats and getting early morning practice in before the competition began.

Last year the tournament saw a record high of more than 500 teams, but they say they're looking to see more come out this year from all over the Northwest.

"we've got people coming from Idaho, Oregon, and the west valley. It's good to see people in the valley coming together," Said Rich Austin the Director of the Yakima Sports Commission.

Young and old gathered for this event,  from brand new players to some who had been playing since they were in elementary school.

One player told me its the tough competition that keeps him and his team coming back each year.

It's not all about the game for everyone though, many play and volunteer their time to set up this event and welcome those who come in from out of state.

Organizers told me they've tried some new things this year, getting more local restaurants and businesses involved.

"We have a lot of great vendors, a lot of good food vendors and we have some merchandise vendors as well just kind of a new look for hot shots, so just come on down and have a good time," Austin told us.

The tournament will run through the rest of today and into tomorrow, in the meantime Yakima Avenue will remain closed until the tournament is finished.
