WAPATO, WA.- Police in Wapato continue to investigate a fatal rollover accident that happened late Tuesday afternoon.
The teenage driver was killed, but his two passengers walked away unharmed.
The Yakima sheriff's office told us they were called around 5pm last night when a vehicle with three people inside rolled over onto North Track Road in Wapato
We were told that the two passengers were wearing their seat belts, unfortunately the young driver who lost his life was not wearing a safety belt.
Mike Russell with the sheriff's office says they've seen several fatal crashes on that stretch of highway 97 through Toppenish and Wapato.
"Safety belts save lives, I remember years ago hearing the story that people die wearing seat belts as well, and that is correct, but statistics show that every one person that has one on that dies over 200 are dying that don't have their seat belts on," said Detective Mike Russell.
The sheriff's office says they still see a lot of seat belt violations, even after patrols have been increased.
At this time they don't believe any illegal substances were involved, they believe the cause is related to driver inattention, however the case is still under investigation.
