Officers Step Up Patrols Over Labor Day Weekend

Posted: Updated:
YAKIMA, WA. -- Law enforcement officers across the state are cracking  down on drunk and impaired drivers and will step up their enforcement over the Labor Day weekend.

A lot of people are planning to have a good time and enjoy themselves for Labor Day weekend, and officers at the Yakima Police Department are fine with that. But they want to make sure that everyone is having fun in a responsible and safe manner.

Wednesday we attended an information meeting with the police department and the Washington State Patrol. They put us through every test you can imagine. The same tests that they do for impaired drivers. Everything from an eye test to blood pressure was taken. This weekend they're going to have extra patrols out looking for not only alcohol impairment, but drugs, including marijuana, as well.

"We're trying to get the message out that we're aware that people are going to go out and use alcohol and smoke marijuana," Officer Shawn Boyle of the Yakima Police Department said. "What we'd like them to do is have a plan in order to get themselves home safely. Whether it's a designated driver, a taxi cab, or some other type of public transportation."

Both the Yakima Police Department and the State Patrol now have drug recognition experts that will be on hand this weekend. And again, if you are drinking this weekend, please make sure you have a safe driver. So everyone can stay safe while enjoying their time off.
