Prison Lifts Lockdown After An Inmate is Killed During Fight at Prison in Pendleton
Inmate shot & killed during fight at prison in Pendleton
UPDATE/PENDLETON, OR - The Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution (EOCI) lifted a lockdown Tuesday after an inmate was shot and killed by a correction officer following a prison fight on August 29.
The Oregon State Police and the Umatilla County District Attorney's Office is continuing an investigation on the incident.
Officials say visitations will resume on Wednesday, September 3.
PREVIOUS - An Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution inmate died Friday morning after a corrections officer shot him during a fight at the prison in Pendleton. The Oregon Dept. of Corrections reports the officer fired a shot from a yard tower as two inmates were assaulting another and wouldn't stop. Jayson Matthew Withers was hit and transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The inmate who was being attacked was taken to a local hospital to be treated for injuries. The third inmate is in segregation.
The prison is currently on lockdown and visiting is canceled until further notice. Detectives from the Oregon State Police Criminal Investigation Division, in cooperation with the Umatilla County District Attorney's Office and DOC, are conducting an investigation.
