RICHLAND, WA - Social media plays a big part in spreading news quickly and with a possible missing child Thursday in Richland, police made use of the tool to get the word out.

They've had their page for a couple years now but Richland Police are starting to update it daily with pictures of suspects and public information.

In Thursday's case it was their first live posting they say as they kept the community updated on the search for a possible missing boy from Sacajawea Elementary. It turned out to be a false alarm. The message was spread so quickly that they believe if there were an actual emergency, social media could help spread that news faster and possibly prevent more incidents.

"Not only to get out good news and education and things like that, but also in a case like yesterday, an opportunity to get information out as its happening and have extra eyes and ears out there working for us."

So far people who follow Richland Police on Facebook have helped identify multiple suspects. Officers say they hope to keep finding ways to use their page to keep people informed and even help crack cases.
