BENTON COUNTY, WA- The dust storm Saturday caused more than 50 vehicles to crash on Interstate 82.

It is a scene that many in Benton County will not forget anytime soon.  A serious dust storm rolled through the area and caused a major pileup on Interstate 82 Saturday just south of Kennewick.

More than 50 vehicles were involved, more than 25 people were injured, and seven were taken to the hospital.

Traffic was backed up and people were standing outside their cars waiting for the scene to clear up.

Viewers sent in video that showed some of the cars involved and how hard it was to see on the roads during the storm.

“If the wind quits blowing and the dust drops down, we'll be able to get people moving through here.  The dust in the air is currently the big problem and the visibility is just about zero,” said Sergeant Bob Brockman, Benton County Sheriff's Office.

No one expected the storm or the outcome of it.

“This really wasn't expected obviously, so we don't know how long it's going to go.  It's Mother Nature and it's hard for us to predict Mother Nature,” said Devin Helland, Benton County Fire District 1.

Cars were stuck everywhere and officials had no choice but to close the interstate.

“We will have the road closed down for a couple to a few hours so people need to think of other ways to get around,” said Helland.

No fatalities were reported, but the incident did make national headlines.
