Fire Displaces 16 People in Yakima

Posted: Updated:
YAKIMA, WA - The Red Cross is stepping in to help more than a dozen people who were displaced in a fire late Wednesday night.

Yakima firefighters are trying to figure out what started the fire in the eight-plex on 10th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. When crews arrived, fire was coming from the roof of the building, in the attic of one of the top units. Firefighters say it was an electrical fire, but investigators aren't sure of the source of electricity.

More than 30 people, nearly half of them children, had to evacuate at first, but 16 people have been able to go home. Firefighters say everyone got out of the building safely because smoke detectors alerted them to the fire.

Firefighters say the flames caused about $300,000 in damages. Two of the units are almost completely destroyed, two others have water damages.
