Pasco City Council Changes How Emergency Action Ordinance

Posted: Updated:
PASCO, WA - The Pasco City Council Monday created a new ordinance on how to respond to emergencies in the city. The changes limit what the mayor can do in the case of an emergency declaration. The mayor can no longer stop the sales of firearms or ammunition during an emergency event and the council must ratify any actions taken by the mayor when they next meet.

Things that did not change during an emergency include stopping the sale of alcohol, gasoline and other combustible substances, closing businesses in an affected area and enacting a city-wide curfew.

Pasco Mayor Matt Watkins says he wants the public to know what could happen in the event of an emergency and encourages the public to read through the details and specifics of the ordinance and what it used to be to understand the changes.

Council members are expected to vote on the changes at their next meeting.
