Grant PUD Announces Milestone in Wanapum Dam Fix

Posted: Updated:
EPHRATA, WA - Grant PUD announced a major milestone today as they continue to repair a crack in the Wanapum Dam.

Crews recently installed the first of 35 steel anchor tendons on the Wanapum Dam spillway, which will increase the river elevation behind the dam.

The tendons begin at the top of the spillway and end deep into the bedrock below the dam, ensuring the long-term stability of the spillway.

Work is also underway to install more than 50 steel anchor bars to repair the 65-foot long crack in one of the spillways.

While the water levels are still about 26 feet below the normal level along the Columbia River, workers are updating the boat launches in the area.

Crews expect the repairs to continue into next year.

Modifications to Wanapum Dam's two fish ladders have proven successful during this year's record-breaking adult migration season.

More than 700,000 salmon and steelhead have already passed the dam on their journey to upstream spawning habitat.
