KENNEWICK, WA - Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is celebrating half a century of being part of the Tri-Cities community.

On Wednesday at the Toyota Center in Kennewick they invited hundreds of people who have worked at the lab to come and reminisce on how far they've come.

Even though the lab began operations in 1965, they decided to celebrate now because 50 years ago is when discussions first began to establish the lab. There was a moment to begin the event where they recognized retirees as well as people who have spent many decades working at the lab to make it what it is.

"It's all about celebrating the accomplishment of the people because at the end of the day it's all about the people here at PNNL. They're what make the institution what it is. We want to celebrate all their accomplishments and their achievements," explained Mike Kluse, Director at PNNL

Many displays illustrated the history of PNNL throughout the years, beginning with the work out near Hanford and looking towards the future.

Director Kluse tells NBC Right Now, much of their current innovations are related to energy conservation and battery research for storing large amounts of energy.
