Selah Hosted Third Annual Welcome Home Veterans Festival

SELAH, WA.- The community of Selah hosted it's third annual welcome home veterans festival Saturday.

Veterans gathered to remember those who have given their lives to serve our country and those still serving in the armed forces.

“Veterans need to know that they are greatly appreciated for what they do they raise their right hand to give their life, and it's more than just a job or an adventure,” Marine Nick Myers told KNDO.

Myers grew up with a father and grandfather who served in the marines.

He said his career choice was an obvious one and he always wanted to follow in his families' footsteps.

But a life in the armed forces can be a difficult one, which is why events like this one, that honor veterans, are so important.

“It's difficult when you're in the service and you're getting close to discharge and you aren't entirely sure what you are going to do after you get out,” Mayor John Gawlik told us.

Gawlik served two tours in Vietnam and says veterans need to know their options once they return.

The event had outreach programs and transitional groups that help past and present veterans ease back in to a regular lifestyle.

Mayor Gawlik said he was happy with the turn out and the support from the community.
