Few Leads With Suspicious Median Fires Keep Investigation Active

Posted: Updated:
KENNEWICK, WA - Kennewick officials are still investigating a series of brush fires that have sparked in the median of Highway 240 between Edison Street and Highway 395.

There have been more than 30 of those fires and crews still are unsure what's causing them. Recently there have been fewer reports, which they believe could be because the weeds in the median aren't as dry at this point in the season.

The Kennewick Fire Department has had few leads. Some reports of the fires also included cars that were parked nearby. The investigations are coming along slowly because each time there hasn't been evidence left behind that could point them in the right direction.

"None that we could conclude definitively that this was an arson cause fire or human set intentionally. Some of the leads we had were vehicles that were associated that were seen there but we realized a lot of those may be a car that pulled up to see the smoke," said Mark Yaden, Fire Marshal for the Kennewick Fire Department.

It's believed cigarettes discarded along the roadway could be to blame, but the high number of fires leads investigators to believe there's something more to be discovered.

The investigations are still ongoing. If you know anything you're asked to call the Kennewick Fire Department at 509-737-0911.
