KENNEWICK, WA - The third phase of the Steptoe Street extension project is finally underway in Kennewick.

This phase of the project will extend Steptoe Street from 4th to10th Ave.

City Officials held a ground breaking ceremony to celebrate the start of the new phase.

Mayor Steve Young says the Steptoe St. project is 19 years in the making, but construction began in 2011 with stage one which extended Steptoe Street from Gage Blvd. to Center Parkway.

The second phase of the project extended Steptoe from Center Parkway to 4th Avenue and that is where crews will begin new the part of the project which Mayor Young says will help people get around town much faster.

"Much faster, much easier, it's a beautiful setting too. If you've noticed in the new Steptoe area we have lighted pathways, we have a lot of natural grown combined with flowers and other shrub," Mayor Young said.

In phase two, crews will also reconstruct 10th Avenue East of Steptoe to Montana street.

Plus crews will upgrade utilities on Hildebrand Bouevard and install a round about at the five corners intersection.

Mayor young says the final phase will eventually connect Steptoe Street to Hildebrand Boulevard.
