JUST ASK SHANE: What happened to the flag on the Blue Bridge?

Posted: Updated:
KENNEWICK, WA - If you drive across the Blue Bridge a lot, you've probably noticed that something is missing.  Bill sent me an email recently asking, "What happened to the flag on the Blue Bridge?  It's been gone for awhile."

I talked with the Washington State Department of Transportation this week.  They took the flag down last month because the cable on the flag pole broke.  But they're now realizing that re-installing the flag and cable is turning into quite a project.

They don't have any equipment that can reach high enough to re-install the damaged parts, so they need to hire a flag pole climber to do the work.  The trouble is, there are only a few people that do that kind of work in the U.S., and they are scattered around the country.

"We've been in contact with a number of flag pole climbers, so we're getting closer to figuring out who we're going to hire for that.  We still have some issues with traffic control because it will require a closure because of safety issues," said Jim Henderson, a WSDOT regional superintendent.

Henderson says the bridge would need to be completely closed for about two to three hours to get the work completed.  They're hoping to get the work finished in the next two to three months before weather becomes a factor.  Henderson also says it will cost around $8,000 to $10,000 to finish the work.
