RICHLAND, WA - As cities grow, so does the need for more fire stations.

Monday they broke ground in the Queensgate area of Richland for a new station that will help cut response times in the city.

Station 74 is the fourth one to be built in the city. It will be staffed by a crew of three people for every 24 hour shift. If a proposed bridge on Duportail is built, the station will also have easy access to other parts of the city.

Currently the fire department tries to respond to any possible emergency location within 4-5 minutes.

"Engines and medic units are drawn away from other parts of the city and when we draw them into this area and away from their normal response zone it weakens the whole system," said Chief Grant Baynes of the Richland Fire Department.

No new trucks or equipment will be needed to staff the station. Additional trucks have been kept at the existing stations and will be moved over once the building is complete.

It will cost around 1.2mil1.2 millionrs a year to operate but most of that funding goes to paying for staff.
