YAKIMA, WA. -- Yakima County deputies spent more than a year tracking a man accused of raping a child and even crossed state lines to bring him to justice.

52-year-old Jose Ruiz is accused a raping a 14-year-old family member in Sunnyside last summer. For the last year, Yakima County Sheriffs deputies were on the hunt for Ruiz. Ruiz left the area as soon as he became a suspect.

Deputies eventually found Ruiz after more than a year of searching. He was hiding more than 100 miles away in Irrigon, Oregon. They arrested him there and brought him to face a jury back here in Yakima.

Ruiz is accused of kidnapping the 14-year-old girl and driving her out to a remote location in Sunnyside. There, police say Ruiz brutally raped the girl. Somehow, she managed to escape wearing just her sweatshirt.

Ruiz chased her as she ran to a nearby home, where the family called 9-1-1. From the day of that incident, it took more than 14 months to track Ruiz down. Now he will stand trial, accused of this vicious crime.
