WASHOUGAL, Wa - The  Fish and Wildlife Department is testing a new way to move fish called a "salmon cannon."

It doesn't really shoot fish, it sucks them through a vacuum tube.

The department recently purchased a system and used it Tuesday at Washougal to load fall chinook salmon into truck for its hatchery program.

The Yakama Nation also is using a salmon cannon for a project in central Washington.

The system was developed by Whooshh Innovations of Bellevue, which created similar technology to move fruit.

A salmon can move through a 120-foot tube in 6 seconds.
