RICHLAND, WA – Thursday was a big day at Kadlec Regional Medical Center and one they've been working towards for years.

The public was invited to take a look inside the new state of the art NICU facility.

There were plenty of speakers present to mark the occasion including retiring congressman Doc Hastings. He and senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell contributed to portions of the fundraising efforts.

One speaker stood out. Monica Perez and her baby Cataleyan had to spend almost 90 days at Kadlec. She says the staff that are moving into the new facility are caring, giving and life savers.

"The staff, the nurses who to this day I feel are like family, they took care of her day in and day out for 89 days. They loved her when i couldn't be here, they fed her when I couldn't be here. For that I will forever be grateful. Thank you," said Perez.

The new facility is five times larger than the old one. They've gone from being able to house 17 babies to 27 with private rooms and comfortable sleeping chairs for family members.

The new unit is set to open at the beginning of October.
