NBC RIGHT NOW-- A new study shows if you're paying bank fees, you are probably paying more than you need to.

Staff at the American Banking Association said nearly three-quarters of customers pay $3.00 or less in monthly bank charges, and most of them pay nothing.

In your hunt for a fee-free account, experts said do not forget to talk to your boss.

Banks including Citibank and Bank of America offer high-level free accounts for employees at partner companies, as well as other perks like preferred rates on mortgages and other loans.

If you are not eligible, you can compare fee-free options at nearby banks to see which one offers the best deal with the fewest hoops to jump through.

Experts also said you might be able to avoid fees by making direct deposits, keeping as little as $100.00 in your account, or doing other business with the bank like using its credit card.

Overdraft fees are still some of the sneakiest charges and the most expensive, some as high as $38.00.

You can avoid those costs by setting up automatic transfers from a savings account, which will cover you if you overdraw.

Often times you can also tell the bank you would rather opt out, which means your purchase would be rejected instead of triggering an overdraft fee.
