City Of Yakima Receives Grant Money To Improve Yakima Airport

Posted: Updated:
YAKIMA, WA.- Plans to expand the number of flights going in and out of the Yakima Airport should get a big boost, thanks to some grant money from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Just recently a grant the city applied for last year was made available to small air terminals all over the country, including Yakima.

The airport will get $290,000 to help with marketing and promotion. The city will match this grant money so they will be able to put almost $600,000 into promoting the airport.

“We're excited because our residents definitely deserve better, so many of our residents have to leave the area to go to Seattle or Pasco, so this is a great opportunity to give better air service to our residents,” Economic Development Manager, Sean Hawkins, told KNDO.

The grant money will focus mainly on marketing and promotion for the airport.

The program will help expand air service to Seattle and establish a new daily flight to Portland.

Hawkins says the key to expanding the airport is increasing awareness so more locals use the terminal.

They hope to see more flights coming in and out within the next two years.
