Zaepfel Stadium Turf Laid, On Track for November Opening

Posted: Updated:
YAKIMA, WA. -- Crews are working non-stop to finish construction on the new Zaepfel Stadium in Yakima. Thursday they reached another major milestone.

The field-turf has finally been laid down . 18-thousand square feet of turf has been stitched together and laid out on the field. And get this, the turf used at Zaepfel Stadium is the same kind of turf that the Seattle Seahawks play on at CenturyLink Field!

When it's all said and done. This project will cost $5 million. The school district hopes some costs will be offset by attracting new sporting events and lowering the maintenance fees. School officials say seeing the project this close to being finished is very rewarding.

"It's so exciting to actually see it coming down," Jim Wright said. "We've had people coming down 40th, stop take a look, and oh my goodness! We're actually taking care of Zaepfel Stadium with track turf and lights."

The work is far from over though. Asphalt has been laid for the track and flattened but it needs two weeks to dry before the rubber coating can be placed on top.

The schedule for the work is very tight. They are still holding out hope that the construction will finish before November 7th. So the stadium can host the annual Davis versus Eisenhower game. Which would be an incredible way to open the new Zaepfel Stadium.
