Hoover Elementary Looks Online to Fundraise for New Playground

Posted: Updated:
YAKIMA, WA. -- Money is tight for schools. So one parent teacher association in Yakima is getting creative.

The Hoover Elementary PTA is turning to a popular method of raising money on the internet to get some much needed playground equipment.

The playground at Hoover Elementary has been around since 1948. That's a long time. And it leaves a lot to be desired for the school's 600 kids. Two years ago the school started fundraising with the help of the students who sold candy bars for 1 dollar. With the kids and the PTA working hard, they raised $11,000 but that isn't enough.

So now they have started a Go-Fund Me account that has been shared all over Facebook in just a few days. The school's principal says this new equipment would make a much larger impact than on just the school.

"I think our kids deserve a new playground," Hoover Principle Luz Juarez-Stump. "The playground is not only for our students but our community as well. We have a lot of kids that need places to go, safe places."

That $11,000 will go a long way but they are plenty short of their goal. The principal tells us they want to get $100,000 in order to build a structure the kids can be proud of.

They're asking for your help. Even a dollar helps!

KENNEWICK: Good news for all of you bargain shoppers out there, Goodwill is opening a brand new store in Kennewick sometime next year. Thanks to a 3.1 million dollar loan and lots of planning, a very large patch of dirt will be home to a 20,000 square foot Goodwill; half warehouse and processing, half retail. The Kennewick store will be closing, however. You can still say, out with your old couches, TV's and clothing, and *into someone else's hands, just at a different location. ...More >>
