Hanford Discussing More Waste Plans

RICHLAND, WA- The River and Plateau Committee discussed the Environmental Restoration Disposal Facility Proposed Plan to make progress without harming the environment.

They want to properly dispose of large wastes that go into the facility, which would be everything from pumps, pipes, and anything else found in Hanford Underground Tanks.

The Environmental Protection Agency saw what they were doing and wanted a change.

Other landfills around the nation have certain rules for encapsulating these materials before they are moved.

“We're looking at the possibility of encapsulating that material in the landfill where it will remain so people do not have to come in contact with something that is very contaminated more than is necessary,” said Pam Larsen, Chairman of the River and Plateau Committee.

The Hanford Advisory Board will consider giving advise to the Department of Energy and the EPA to see if they think the plan is a good idea.

The set deadline for that is still in discussion.
