NBCRightNow.com - A Benton County Sheriff's Deputy was honored this weekend for his bravery during a standoff this past summer in Pasco.

The Washington State Fraternal Order of Police gave Benton County Deputy Jason Erickson their award for valor.

Police say Erickson jumped into action last July after his neighbor, the suspect in this officer-involved shooting case started threatening others with a gun.

Erickson was off duty but escorted kids in the area to a neighbor's home and returned to find the suspect pointing a gun at his neighbor.

Erickson then fired several shots at the suspect.

The Washington State Fraternal Order of Police say Erickson's actions saved his neighbor's life and kept the children safe.

In addition to recognizing Deputy Erickson, Kennewick Police Detective Marco Monteblanco was honored as the 2014 Washington State Steve Young Member of the Year.

"This prestigious Steve Young Award is presented to the member of the Washington State Fraternal Order of Police who possesses and has shown the same qualities as the late National President, Steve Young demonstrated in his leadership and dedication to the Fraternal Order of Police in addition to his commitment and compassion to law enforcement officers and their families. Steve Young truly believed in the necessity of a member's commitment to continue the growth of the organization throughout our great nation. Thank you for your honesty, integrity and loyalty, the willingness to make a difference and for always doing what is in the best interest of the order and its members," said a press release.
