RICHLAND, WA - Neighbors told us Thursday they are concerned about a proposed building plan that could add an estimated 744 car trips through their neighborhood in Richland.

Dan Rutherford was given notice just about a week from Thursday October 9th that his neighborhood of seven years could be changing. Seattle land owner Duane Smith has proposed a multi-family construction plan that would add 112 apartments to the Willowbrook area.

Dan and his neighbors see badgers, rabbits, birds, ducks and owls regularly in the wetlands outside their back doors. Dan told me this plan is going to destroy the natural habitat of this portion the Amon Creek area that is partially owned by the Tapteal Greenway.

"One of the concerns of the neighborhood here is that the access to this property would be through this residential road, in Willowbrook, and it's a private driveway off of this road" is what Dan explained.

We reached out to Smith's architect to gather more information about the plan. Laurey Tobiason told me the property is set to give the wetland more room and he called this a conservation area. He also says these buildings are around 100 feet away from housing property lines that already exist. He wants the public to know the City of Richland is conducting a site plan review, therefore the public will get a chance to comment on the project. Laurey wishes the public will take a look at the plan and feel free to comment. Dan wants the public to know this area is a gem in Eastern Washington and should be preserved to its full potential.

If you are interested in making a comment to the city, please do so by clicking here. Comments are due by October 10th at 5 p.m.
