Cardinal Francis George Visits La Salle High School For Gym Dedication Mass

Posted: Updated:
UNION GAP, WA.- A Catholic Cardinal who served for many years with the Yakima Diocese was in the Yakima Valley Friday for a dedication mass at La Salle high school.

After the gas leak at La Salle high school Thursday everyone was wondering whether the Cardinal would still make an appearance for the mass dedication.

He arrived Friday morning and everything went off without a hitch.

Cardinal Francis George served in Yakima in the early nineties before moving to Chicago to serve there.

He made the long journey back here after La Salle high school decided to dedicate and name their gym after him.

Staff and students say they spent months planning and preparing for his arrival.

“We were very excited and very excited to get started planning and finally meet the Cardinal after knowing this gym was after him,” student Kennedy Tri told KNDO.

The Cardinal was supposed to make a visit to Yakima back in March but was unable to because of illness. but after a long journey he's glad to finally make the trip.

“The destination makes it all worth while, I was very pleased to come back to Yakima. I was well received by many who were very kind to me,” Cardinal Francis George told us.

The Cardinal told KNDO the beauty of the area is what he missed the most.

He was thankful to be able to see the mountains and blue skies once more.

The mass dedication wrapped up around three Friday afternoon, but the Cardinal will be staying in Yakima for the rest of the weekend.

He'll speak at churches in the area on Saturday and celebrate Sunday mass at Saint Paul Cathedral.

KENNEWICK: Good news for all of you bargain shoppers out there, Goodwill is opening a brand new store in Kennewick sometime next year. Thanks to a 3.1 million dollar loan and lots of planning, a very large patch of dirt will be home to a 20,000 square foot Goodwill; half warehouse and processing, half retail. The Kennewick store will be closing, however. You can still say, out with your old couches, TV's and clothing, and *into someone else's hands, just at a different location. ...More >>
