JUST ASK SHANE: Why is the Playground at Howard Amon Park Closed?

Posted: Updated:
RICHLAND, WA - A viewer wants to know why her son's favorite playground is roped off and closed right now.  Brianna sent me an email this week saying, "I tried to take my son to the playground at Howard Amon Park last week, and it seems to be closed.  Can you find out if it will re-open anytime soon?"

I talked with Richland's parks & recreation director and found out that a portion of the playground is closed right now for a resurfacing project.  They're taking out the wood chips that used to be under the zip line area, and replacing them with a new poured-in-place rubber surface.

The area was closed off last week, and it should take two to three weeks to finish the work.  The new surface will be safer and easier to maintain, and your kids won't be carrying home those wood chips in their pockets anymore.

"It's safe and easy to maintain.  It's clean.  The kids and parents seem to like it, so we've been converting some of our newer parks as we build them into this rubberized surface.  As other surfaces start to wear out or need maintenance, we're replacing them with the rubberized surface as well," said Joe Schiessl, Richland's Parks & Recreation Director.

In fact, they've already installed the rubberized play surface around the sturgeon at the playground.  We should point out that the rest of the playground at the park is still open, and the zip line area will be open again in two to three weeks.
