NBC RIGHT NOW-- On Thursday morning, The Great Washington Shake Out is happening where more than a million people in the state will brush up on their earthquake preparedness skills in order to survive and recover quickly from big earthquakes.

While earthquake hazard varies from region to region, most of Washington is prone to earthquakes.

Some things to keep in mind as you prepare for one is if you are inside a building, move no more than a few steps, then drop to the ground, take cover and hold on.

If you are outdoors when the shaking starts, you should find a clear spot away from buildings, trees, streetlights, and power lines and then drop cover and hold on.

If you are driving, pull over to a clear location, stop and stay there with your seat belt fastened until the shaking stops.

The shake out is at 10:16 Thursday morning and if you want to participate you need to register online.
