RICHLAND, WA- The City of Richland honored Timbers Apartments as their Green Business of the Year.

Timbers Apartments has worked very hard for a long time to get their complex as green as it is today. The Richland complex has 267 units and those changes did not just happen over night.

In 2005, new managers came in and have made improvements ever since.  Their improvements included reducing water and energy waste, more recycling, more energy efficient sliding doors in every unit, new windows, and they are even testing a new type of grass that requires less water.

“What we're doing here may seem small compared to some big corporations and companies, but if everyone does a small part, then it creates a big result.  We truly believe that we need to protect the environment for the next generation,” said Dannie McLaughlin, Timbers Apartment Owner.

The complex was built in the 1970's.  The green work cost nearly half a million dollars but they received loans from the city to help them.

The owners said they are not done yet.  They are trying to figure out a way to use wind turbines on the complex roof to get energy.
