Yakima's Last Record Store Saved from Going Out of Business

Posted: Updated:
YAKIMA, WA. -- It's not something you see much anymore, a music store.

Yakima's last one almost disappeared but a local family has now taken over ownership and wants to make it better than before. Ever since the invention of iPods and iPhones, local music stores like off the record have had trouble making ends meet.

In fact, in August, this store announced it would be going out of business after nearly 30 years of operation. Now the sign outside the door reads, "Off the Record Lives On!"

Just a few weeks ago, a local family bought the music shop and is putting the final touches on getting everything back on the shelves. The new owners say they aren't doing it for the money, they're doing it for the love of good quality music.

"My hope is to continue on and to have someone standing here 29 years from now talking about continuing on even further," Gary Pruitt, owner of Off the Record said.

The new owners want to make some big changes like increasing the collection of vinyl records, adding a refreshment stand and really making Off The Record a place to hang out like the music stores of the 60's and 70's.

After a brief time being closed, Off The Record is back open, and it continues to defy the odds.
