JUST ASK SHANE: What are Those Sand Dunes in Richland?

Posted: Updated:
RICHLAND, WA - A viewer wants to know why it looks like the sand dunes of the Oregon Coast are taking over parts of Richland. Debbi sent us a Facebook message asking, "Have you seen the piles of sand on the Columbia Point golf course? It looks like sandy beaches have been brought to Richland. What's going on?"

I talked with the folks at Columbia Point, and they tell me they aren't building a beach, they're just rebuilding one of the biggest sand bunkers on the course.  It's all happening on hole #14 which runs right along George Washington Way.  Crews took all of the sand out of the huge bunker earlier this year, and they actually filled in a large portion of the old bunker with sod, making it about a third of the size it used to be.

The mounds of white you see are the sand that they'll use to fill the bunker back in again, along with a second bunker on the other side of the green.  The groundskeepers tell me they're using about 350 tons of sand.  They've had 11 dump trucks full of sand delivered already, and there are still a couple more on the way.
