Yakima Approves Moratorium on New Homeless Shelters

Posted: Updated:
YAKIMA, WA - New homeless shelters won't be opening in Yakima for the next six months.

The Yakima City Council approved a six-month moratorium Tuesday night on any new homeless shelters in the city.

City staff had requested the moratorium in response to interest in turning an old market building into a shelter. That could affect homeless shelters moving into 14 other small convenience centers in the city.

The city council did approved three winter shelters already established in churches.
