YAKIMA, WA-- Every year when it gets cold many people thinks it is ok to leave their car running and unattended while it warms up before they hit the road, but police said that is not a good idea.

Mike Bastinelli from the Yakima Police Department said it happens every year because people do not think it will happen to them.

"Criminals look for opportunity and if they see a car that's running and unlocked, that's an opportunity, so we want to take away that opportunity for the thieves," Bastinelli said.

He also said leaving your car on and unattended as it warms up is illegal if it is parked on the street, but you can leave your car running in your driveway or on other private property.

If an officer sees your car running and left unattended on the street you could get a fine of more than $100.00.

Bastinelli said even though it is legal on your private property, you should always air on the side of caution so you do not become the next target for a car thief.
