KSD Decides on New Planned Site to Replace Desert Hills Middle School

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, WA - The Kennewick School District Board of Directors has decided the new location to replace Desert Hills Middle School will be in Coyote Canyon.

A survey found more than 50 percent of people wanted the new site at Clodfelter Road near five corners.

Here is a breakdown of the survey:

· 53.3% - The site at Clodfelter Road near five corners should be named Desert Hills Middle School.

· 15.82% - The site at 27th Avenue and Southridge Boulevard should be named Desert Hills Middle School.

· 18.01% - Neither site should be named Desert Hills Middle School and new names should be selected after the bond election.

· 13.13% - This decision should be delayed until after the bond election.

The Kennewick School District will put a bond on the February ballot. If it passes the bond would also include building a fifth new middle school at Southridge Boulevard and 27th Avenue, replacing Westgate Elementary at its current site, and building two new elementary schools.

Construction of the new Desert Hills Middle School off Clodfelter Road would begin in spring 2015 if the bond passes.

Students would stay in their current school until the new school opens in fall of 2016.

The old Desert Hills Middle School site would be maintained by the district until the Board decides on the future of the property.

The five projects are estimated to cost taxpayers less than $4 per month on a $200,000 home.
