City Approves Three Winter Shelters In Yakima

Posted: Updated:
YAKIMA, WA.- Churches in the Yakima community have partnered up this year to help the homeless.

Three winter shelters have been approved to open in the area this season.

Sunrise Outreach Ministries opens shelters for the homeless every year, but this year they're going a step further.

They'll be opening what they call a warming center, a place where people can come during the day and receive three hot meals.

Sunrise director Ken Trainor says even with the large numbers of homeless in the community they won't turn people away.

“When it's deadly cold and it's in the single digits and all that, if people show up to our shelter we aren't going to turn them away,” Trainor told KNDO.

Last year the city had them improve safety requirements for the shelters.

They updated all fire alarm systems that send alerts directly to the fire departments.

They are also looking for more volunteers to help out this holiday season.

You can contact Sunrise Outreach Ministry on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. if you are interested in helping.
