YAKIMA, WA - According to the Yakima Fire Department, a large water main break occurred at 5:18 a.m. at the 100 Block of East Yakima Avenue. Yakima Fire responded to an automatic alarm at the front entrance of Santiago's Restaurant and Vida Home and Rug Gallery.

Firefighters found "copious" amounts of water that flooded eastbound on E. Yakima Avenue. This flood started at the restaurant and extended through E. Yakima Avenue and Naches Avenue. The cause of this flood is currently unknown.

The water lifted up asphalt about three to four inches which has washed out a large amount of dirt and rock that supports the street asphalt. Crews will be working on the repairs but the total damage has not been fully assessed. It is also unknown on how long it will take to restore the water services.

Santiago's restaurant owner says they will be open for business if crews are able to get the water restored at their business. The owner of Vida Rugs says they will be closed this weekend and hope to reopen on Monday.

East Yakima Avenue from First Street to Second Street will be closed until further notice pending street damage assessment.
