Yakima Has High Number Of Homeless In The City

YAKIMA, WA.- The city of Yakima has dealt with high numbers of homeless in the community for years.

Sunrise Ministries director Ken Trainor says the reason we see so many unemployed and homeless is because of a lack of jobs in the city.

Trainor says his team surveys the homeless who come to their shelters each year and the number one thing they are looking for is employment.

But he says it's almost next to impossible for many of these people to secure jobs with local businesses.

“If you have a felony it doesn't matter how long ago it was it is almost impossible to get a job in Yakima and it doesn't matter if you've served your time or haven't been in trouble since, a lot of businesses just won't hire you,” Trainor told KNDO.

Trainor says one of Sunrise Ministries' goals is to partner with local businesses in the area and begin programs that help integrate the homeless back into the work force.

Sunrise Ministries will have three homeless shelters around the city this winter.

They encourage anyone looking to volunteer or local businesses willing to help with employment to call their offices.
