RSD Narrows List of Names for New Elementary School

RICHLAND, WA - The Richland School District is getting closer to naming the new elementary school which is being built near the intersection of Gala Way and Westcliffe Boulevard in South Richland.

A committee overseeing the naming process has narrowed the list to five names that will be presented to the Richland School Board on November 12th.

The five finalists are: 

- Appleseed Elementary - Connection to the orchards that used to be in the area; also related to Johnny Appleseed who symbolized community service, nature and social responsibility.  

- Leona Libby Elementary - Worked on the Hanford Project under Enrico Fermi; a female scientist of international stature.  

- Lake Lewis Elementary - Name of the prehistoric lake that covered and helped form the region.  

- Orchard Grove Elementary - Connection to the orchards that used to be in the area; symbolizes growth.  

- York Elementary - African American man who was part of the Lewis & Clark expedition; played a meaningful role in exploration of the American West. (No known first name)

The new school will open in August 2015. The district says the 71,000 square foot building will be able to hold about 700 students.
