Yakima Police Department Is Introducing New Uniforms

Posted: Updated:
YAKIMA, WA.- The Yakima police department is changing things up a bit; they're planning to introduce new uniforms to their ranks.

The department's traditional French blue uniforms are being faded out, according to the department.

More and more police departments across the country are switching over to dark blue uniforms.

Captain Greg Copeland says they're cheaper and give officers a more uniform look.

“As they phase out this French blue color the choices are getting fewer and fewer and the choices that are out there are getting more expensive. So the shirts, the dark blue uniforms, are definitely cheaper than what we are buying right now,” Copeland told KNDO.

YPD won't start wearing the new uniforms until the end of winter.

Over the next few months, officers will go through sizing, measuring, and ordering the new uniforms.

Captain Copeland told us many of the officers were sentimental when it came to the old uniforms and were disappointed to see them go, but he told us it's out with the old and in with the new.
