Community Gathers in Memory of Dick Sanders

Tears and laughter filled the room as everyone was telling stories about Dick Sanders. He built most of the church himself and often left everyone wondering how he did it all. RICHLAND, WA - Dick Sanders passed away over the weekend when he was swept with a current during a snorkeling trip in Maui. Family, friends and community members gathered Wednesday night at Hillspring Church, formerly known as the Cathedral of Joy, for the first time since his passing.

Tears and laughter filled the room as everyone was telling stories about Dick Sanders. He built most of the church himself and often left everyone wondering how he did it all. He was a youth pastor to some and father figure to many.

Laurel Adams, whose daughter is close with Dick's daughter, said, "He died going for it. He went for everything he did full throttle. I think he went out full throttle too. We've been all saying superman flew home and I think we all believe that."

A formal service has not been scheduled yet for Sanders as family members are trying to get his wife Rosie back home. She is still in the hospital after the two were swept out in the waters of Maui. At one point she was fighting for her life as well but seemed to make a turn for the better on Tuesday morning.
