Yakama Nation Plans to Sue Over Hanford Cleanup Plan

Posted: Updated:
YAKIMA COUNTY, WA. -- The Yakama Tribal Council announced that it plans to sue the Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency over their plans to clean up a portion of the Hanford site.

The Yakama Nation claims the clean up plans do not protect human health and the environment. Some of the cleanup has already begun in Hanford's 300 area which is just north of Richland.

In their court paperwork, the tribe claims that hazardous chemical and radioactive wastes have contaminated the soil and the drinking water in the 300 area. The tribe wants a more aggressive clean up of that hazardous waste.

The tribe is not seeking any monetary damages in the lawsuit. Instead they are requesting that the judge order a different cleanup plan to protect the Columbia River for future generations.

We made a phone call to the Yakama Nation Thursday afternoon that was not immediately returned.
