Truck Fire Temporarily Closes A Portion of I-82, Near Oregon State Line

Posted: Updated:

BENTON CO., Wash. - Firefighters say a mechanical issue likely led to a fire, involving a truck, that closed down a portion of Interstate 82 Saturday morning.

Fire Chief Rolland Watt, of Benton County Fire District 6  says the driver of a pick-up truck, towing a travel trailer, went up in flames about 3 miles west of the Oregon state line. The driver and his pet got out safely.

However, firefighters let the truck and trailer burn because there were five propane tanks--two were empty, three full--and loaded weapons inside the truck. The fire was so intense that it was overpowering the water firefighters were using to extinguish the flames, so firefighters let it burn itself out.

Chief Watt says one of the tanks exploded, flying across the freeway; ammunition was also heard going off.

State patrol closed a portion of the highway, before re-opening one westbound lane, while crews work to clear the debris.

The truck and trailer are a total loss; firefighters estimate the damage to be around $60,000.
