Yakima Hopes to Begin Construction on Cascade Mill Site in Summer

Posted: Updated:
YAKIMA, WA. -- The former Boise Cascade Mill site in Yakima could see new development begin by the end of this summer. Yakima's City Council met Tuesday morning to discuss the future roads that could be built on the site.

The big topic of discussion for the city council Tuesday morning was what the road layout should be for the future Boise Cascade Mill site development. No decisions were made Tuesday but five different options were laid out. All of them included a different combination of an exit off Interstate 82. Some options included a roundabout instead of a stop light, which can slow traffic.

The state department of transportation says access from Interstate 82 could be great for the future development on this land.

"If you provide the ramps where it's needed for development," Don Whitehouse Department of Transportation Regional Manager said. "And you complete the county road system and the city road system, the whole thing works better all together. And it distributes traffic, makes it easier for people to get to where they want to get to."

Big changes to the mill site could start happening very soon. Some of the road construction could start sometime in the summer. But the major road block, no pun intended, is getting funding, especially dealing with the interstate. It will involve planning between local, state and federal authorities.
