YAKIMA, WA.- Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital is taking the steps to ensure their patients and employees eat healthy, they recently joined the national “Healthier Hospitals Initiative”.

The campaign challenges hospitals around the country to provide healthier meal options, engage the community in how they can build a healthier environment and aims to help cut health care costs.

Memorial says they'll attempt to reduce meat purchases by 20 percent and increase purchases from local farms in the area.

“Diet and food is the main determinant of health and you know there is an issue with obesity in the nation and as well as the Yakima County,” said Vice President of Operations, Jim Aberle.

Yakima County exceeds the state's obesity rates, they told us that's just one more reason why creating a healthier community is so important.

Along with healthier foods the hospital will be cutting out unhealthy drinks, reducing portion sizes, and trying to use only fresh vegetables instead of frozen.
