RICHLAND, WA – A new trail opened to the public Friday on Badger Mountain.

If you're driving up near the Dallas Road side of the mountain the new trail starts just about half a mile up from the parking lot at the base. Cutting the ribbon to the trail Friday was a great moment for the Friends of Badger Mountain group that spent about 5 years on the project.

The trail itself is a gradual climb so runners or people who have a hard time hiking slopes might appreciate it more. It does run through private property at points so they'd like you to stay on the trails. While cutting through orchards and down into canyons the trail gives hikers a change of scenery.

"It gives our visitors, our preserve visitors another opportunity to see another part of the preserve and to see different vistas. It also alleviates, we expect it to alleviate a lot of the traffic that are on our current trails," said Bob Bass the president of Friends of Badger Mountain.

The group is already looking ahead with a ridge preservation and trail campaign. It'll help create trail-ways that would connect for miles and miles and cut around Candy Mountain to give the public more access to the preserve.

So far the group has raised about $645,000 out of their 1.5 million goal. Head to friendsofbadger.org to learn how to help.
