15 Tons of Biosolids Spill into Creek at Blewett Pass

BLEWETT PASS, WA. (AP) - Officials say about 15 tons of sewage biosolids landed in a creek after a semi-truck overturned early Monday on Highway 97 at Blewett Pass.

Jessie Israel with King County's Wastewater Treatment Division says the amount of the spill was about half of what was originally reported. She says a vacuum truck removed everything possible from the spill site by 3:30 a.m. Tuesday.

County and state Ecology Department workers will monitor the water in Swauk Creek for about a week.

The truck and trailer overturned after hitting a patch of ice. The driver was not seriously hurt.

Biosolids are a sewage treatment plant byproduct. They were being trucked from King County's Brightwater plant to be used as a fertilizer at a farm in Douglas County.
