Apple Maggots Could Be Making Headlines Again

Posted: Updated:
YAKIMA, WA.- We haven't heard much about apple maggots in Washington since the 1980's, but they could be making headlines again.

The "Washington Tree Fruit Association" has filed a complaint with the state's agriculture department.

They claim that yard waste infested with apple maggots is being illegally transported by commercial carriers from quarantined areas to "apple maggot free" areas for composting.

This violates the apple maggot quarantine regulations put in place in the 80's.

The tree fruit association wants USDA- APHIS, the nation's plant protection organization, to come to Eastern Washington to investigate.
