City Council Vote for New Soccer Complex, Public Pool Could Come Next Month

YAKIMA, WA. -- The City of Yakima is working on plans to build a brand new public pool and a new soccer complex. Those two plans could soon be presented to the city council for a vote.

Chesterly Park is currently the proposed site for that brand new public pool. Now a lot of the details have yet to be worked out, such as the location for the new soccer complex. But this is what we know so far.

For both the pool and the new soccer complex, the total cost for each is estimated at $9 million. The city council is working on two private partnerships to secure half the funding for these projects. The YMCA will be the partner for the pool and a company called SOZO Sports of Central Washington is helping to fund and operate the soccer complex.

City Manager Tony O'Rourke says both facilities are a big need for the Yakima community.

"State of the art facilities, greatly needed, long overdue," O'Rourke said. "And we're thrilled that both the city council and these private partners have come together to create something that will be a win-win for the community."

Chesterly Park currently has 5 soccer fields, but O'Rourke says it was designed as a park and not a soccer complex. He says he's very excited about the new soccer complex which could include 12 to 14 soccer fields, with both natural grass and artificial turf. It could also include an indoor soccer facility.

So now the next step is getting the plans written up and sent to a vote in front of the city council. That vote expected to happen next month.
