Fire Crews Battle Apartment Fire on Edison St. Sunday Afternoon

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, WA - The Kennewick Fire Department says they responded to an apartment fire this afternoon at 51 N. Edison Street.

Firefighters say people living in the apartment complex noticed smoke coming from an upstairs unit and tried to put out the fire with extinguishers.

When fire crews arrived, the people living in the unit told them everyone had gotten out safety.

The fire is still under investigating but fire crews believe it may have started in the fireplace.

Medics evaluated one person who did not need further care.

The Kennewick Fire Department was assisted by units from Benton County Fire District 1, Pasco Fire Department, Franklin County Fire District 3, Benton County PUD and the Kennewick Police Department.

Power was shut off to the D Building, displacing eight families. The Red Cross was contacted but all families had other resources to use.

The Kennewick Fire Department would like to emphasis the importance of yearly cleaning and maintenance of all fireplaces and wood stoves by a certified technician.
