Hermiston Looking to Boost City Park System

Posted: Updated:
HERMISTON, OR (AP) - The Parks and Recreation director for Hermiston told the City Council this week that the park system needs to keep up with the growing population.

Parks and Recreation Director Larry Fetter says national standards suggest cities have 10 acres of park space per every 1,000 residents.  By that measure, the Eastern Oregon city should have about 175 acres of parks. But Hermiston only has 101.

The shortage is particularly noticeable on the east side of town. Highway 395 splits Hermiston's population roughly in half, but 94 of the city's 101 acres of parks are located west of the highway.

Fetter said the department has several ideas for park locations on the east side.
